CONFESSIONAL
Caitlin was approached by an alumni to showcase a piece in the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk. Adhering to her female activist nature, she wanted to do an interactive performance art piece on the cultural silencing of woman through the senses - taste, touch, sound, and sight. The women were as dolls would be in a dollhouse: silent and showing no emotional response. The audience was encouraged to interact with the women in different ways. With touch, they could dress or undress her, paint her, apply make up, take it off. With sound, we had a playlist of songs that spoke about women that the audience could listen to with the performer. With taste (performed by Caitlin Ferrell), the audience had a choice of foods and drinks that they could feed me. There are a lot of themes at play here and the reactions ranged from aggressive and intrusive to uncomfortable and protective, but the intention was to expose the ways in which women are not given choice but instead choices are forced upon them.
